Driving in Korea, what to prepare

We have not driven every route ourselves. Every value here is read from a Korean government or operator document, and a cell we could not confirm is left blank.

What a visitor needs before driving in Korea: whether your international driving permit is accepted, how expressway tolls and Hi-pass work, and where street parking is not allowed.

International driving permit

Whether your permit works here, and for how long.

Bring the permit with you. Korean law lets a holder of an international driving permit drive for one year from the day of entry, and only the vehicle classes written on that permit. The permit must come from the 1949 Geneva convention, the 1968 Vienna convention, or a mutual recognition agreement with Korea.

Expressway tolls

How tolls are collected and what a rental car already has.

Where you may not park

Where the law says you may not stop or park.

Article 32 of the Road Traffic Act lists the places where you may not stop or park. One of those is simply any place the metropolitan or provincial police commissioner has designated, so a local sign can create a no-parking spot that is not on any national list. Read the sign.
